Spring Floral Centerpiece with Lilac and Spirea
We’re just a few weeks away from the start of spring, and though I fancy myself a fall/winter kind of girl, the floral designer side of me delights at spring’s abundance. Daffodils, tulips, poppies, hellebore, lilac, all in bloom and rising to the challenge of imbuing our gardens and homes with energy after winter’s quiet restraint.

Last spring, I had the chance to play with this lovely purple lilac and blooming spirea from the Union Square Greenmarket, and rather than fill the arrangement with a variety of flowers, I wanted to let the textural lilac have the moment it deserves. I’m a minimalist, at heart, and love arrangements that highlight the movement and shape of one or two different kinds of flowers.
This arrangement felt like an explosion of color, texture, and fragrance: an apt representation of a New York spring. I paired it with sandstone taper candles, to keep the palette soft and grounded, and set it on our dining table to bring a bit of the season indoors.
