The Flower Press – January

The air coming off of the Hudson River is cold and damp. The wind whips through the streets outside of our building and rattles through the bare limbs and branches of the London Plane trees outside. Though I work with flowers, winter is my favorite time of year. It is quiet and gray, and offers in its apparent dormancy moments of introspection, reflection, and rest.
In Katherine May’s book, Wintering, she describes, “the changes that take place in winter are a kind of alchemy, an enchantment performed by ordinary creatures to survive.” At Elderflower, this winter in particular marks a season of quiet change. 2025 was a year of uncertainty—both in our own home and outside of it—and though the challenges have been many, they have also brought clarity and focus, and a renewed sense of connection to my craft.
I’m so excited to share this next phase of Elderflower with you. We have a new look—designed so beautifully by Kat at Serenate Studio (more on this below!). And this year I hope to deepen the connections to our community here in upper Manhattan, through weekly flowers, events, and collaborations with other local businesses and creatives.
There’s more to come on the other side of the winter. Thank you for being here.
xx Annamarie

Connecting with Flowers in Winter
When the flower markets are quiet, and the weather is gloomy, finding ways to continue to engage with flowers can provide the necessary mood-boosting energy to get through these slow and dormant months. Read on for a few ideas on how to stay connected to the beauty of flowers in the middle of winter.
