The Flower Press – June

I grew up in Texas, where the summer heat lingers well into the evening and the hum of cicadas pulses through thick, warm air. In elementary school, summers felt like an eternity, and I relished in the slow days and the aimlessness. My sister and I would spend afternoons in the pool in our backyard, and count down the days until our annual family trip to Florida’s Gulf Coast.
I have such nostalgia for childhood summers, and yet it is—by far—my least favorite season as an adult in New York City. The summer heat feels different standing on the platform of a subway station, with tote bags and groceries in tow.
Flowers help. My favorite summer blooms are carefree, wispy and wild: cosmos, coreoposis, scabiosa, textured grasses, echinacea, ammi. They are evocative of the season, they move and they float, embodying the childhood freedom of having nothing to do and nowhere to be.
As we enter these last few weeks of spring, and look to the summer ahead, I’m leaning into flowers as a means of connection in our upper Manhattan communities. If you live in or frequent the area, stay tuned for a few new things coming this summer and into the fall, and get in touch for any flower needs.
Thank you for being here.
xx ANNAMARIE

Flower Orders Paused
With the chaos that is the end of the school year, I’m pausing weekly flower orders for the next 2 weeks so I can be available for this transition into summer break! The online shop will re-open June 17th, for pick-up on Wed. June 24th. If you need flowers for an event, you can still get in touch here!
American Wildflowers: A Literary Field Guide
New on my favorite flower books list! A collection of poems and essays, spanning several centuries, that celebrate and feature wildflowers. Tucked into the pages of the book are stunning, bold watercolors by Leanne Shapton.
The Latest from Floralist
Floralist is a space that celebrates flower people. May’s article features Saint Yocom, Los Angeles-based ceramicist making one-of-a-kind vases that hang on the wall for their ceramics studio, Vines and Vessels.
